Thank you for becoming a 2011 Clear the Air Challenge Community Leader! Your support will help us spread the word and empower residents to “Drive Less, Drive Smarter” and take action to help improve our air quality!
Required Commitment
All of our community leaders must commit to:
- Actively participate in the Clear the Air Challenge this summer.
- Create an account on www.ClearTheAirChallenge.org.
- Log trips & miles saved each week during the Challenge.
- Commit to at least one of the following TravelWise strategies to help improve air quality:
- Public transportation (bus, TRAX, FrontRunner)
- Carpool/Rideshare
- Active Transportation (walk, bike)
- Telework or e-Travel
i. Work from home, download a movie or music instead of driving to the store, shop online, or arrange a conference call or webinar instead of an in-person meeting.
- Flexible or compressed workweek
i. Flexible start/end times to avoid traffic congestion, three 12-hour days, four 10-hour days.
- Trip Chaining
i. Planning errands together for maximum fuel efficiency
- Support word-of-mouth efforts by encouraging your local core community to be involved.
- See ‘cafeteria list’ below for options to help us spread the word and actively participate in the Clear the Air Challenge.
- We ask that you choose at least two of the listed options (or let us know if you have some ideas of your own!)

Via your organization
- Place the complimentary Clear the Air Challenge web banner on your organization’s website homepage.
- Include a Clear the Air Challenge ad in your organization’s electronic or print newsletters.

- Include an article about the Challenge in your organization’s electronic or print newsletters.
- Send Clear the Air Challenge email updates to your distribution lists.

- Attend a media kick-off or awards ceremony event with other Challenge issuers:
- Kick-off Event: Friday, June 10th
- Media Kick-off News Conference; Location TBD; 10:00 a.m.
- Clear the Air Fair; Gallivan Center; 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
- Awards Event: Saturday, July 16th
- Downtown Farmer’s Market (confirmed); 11:00 a.m. awards ceremony.

- Write a Letter to the Editor or Opinion piece:

- Encourage participation in the Clear the Air Challenge.
- Emphasize personal role everyone must play.
- Emphasize the positive action Utahns are already taking.
- Emphasize the ease and enjoyment of alternative transportation.
- Utilize your expertise to emphasize the importance of Driving Less and Driving Smarter.

Social Media
- Become a ‘guest blogger’ for the Clear the Air Challenge.
- Share your commitment – why you chose it, what you hope to accomplish, how you will hold yourself accountable, etc.
- Share an experience – did you take TRAX for the first time? Host a carpool? Bike to a community event? Tell us about your experience, what worked, what didn’t, what you learned and how you feel.
- Share what your company or organization is doing – give us a progress report on your team’s progress.
- Post Challenge-related updates on your Facebook, Twitter or blog accounts.

There are many more ways to ‘clear the air’ instead of just using public transportation or carpooling.
How about using less electricity that comes from coal plants? How about recycling paper & plastic? How about using less plastic? How about composting?
